Tonya Shearer

Tonya has been a SCUBA diver and Marine Biologist for over 15 years. Her research focuses on the conservation of coral reef ecosystems and uses molecular technology to address ecological and biological questions regarding to coral health. Studies of coral populations have taken her to reefs throughout the world, including the Bahamas, Belize, Bermuda, Fiji, Florida, the Flower Garden Banks, Moorea and Panama. One of her current projects involves analysis of the range expansion of the non-native orange cup coral (Tubastraea coccinea) throughout Florida and the northwestern Gulf of Mexico.

Tonya received her Masters degree from LSU and her PhD from the University of Buffalo. She currently is finishing her research at Georgia Tech and is launching AMEGEN Consulting, a scientific consulting business that specializes in the use of genomic technology and environmental assessments to address ecological questions for the practical, efficient and responsible use of marine resources. A second focus of AMEGEN is in training, managing and contracting Scientific Divers to safely and effectively conduct underwater research.

Who we are... The Atlanta Reef Dwellers Scuba Club is Atlanta's oldest independent dive club, and is not associated with any dive shop or certifying agency. We exist only to serve our members! What we do... Our monthly meetings consist of informative lectures, equipment demonstrations, slide and video shows, and an opportunity to meet and chat with other divers. All levels of experience are represented, from crusty veterans to those not yet certified! Our members participate in dive trips and/or social events almost every month. With diving as close as Lake Lanier, and as far away as Australia, our members have been there! The club is good for finding dive buddies, going on dive trips, learning more about our sport, or organizing your own dive getaway. Everyone's welcome...
